The apex predators
Some people believe simple humans are the apex predators, the best of the best, the unbeatable. This is true… to an extent. Humans are the apex predators but not simple humans, humans who don’t have powers. We are the apex predators. Us, we are called the Apex Sapiens. We do not fail, we do not give up. Well that’s what we are supposed to be, I however do not have powers. I do not fit in even though I am the son of the legendary leaders, Cassandra and Alexander Blades. They led the Group to glory. They dared to rebels against the humans. The humans, the ones who say they are better than us, the ones that would hunt us all down if they knew where we were hiding.
I hated not being able to use any powers. I hated watching all these people lift stones and tree trunks effortlessly. All the while I just sat there watched them. I had tried to use my powers all the time but no matter how much I tried, how much I strained to reach my “inner peace”, the result would always be the same: I would fail. I dreamed of having powers, stronger than anyone else but when I woke up I just felt more depressed. Its worse when my friends show me tricks they can do with telekinesis. one of my friends, Alisha, has the odd power of telepathy. Right now she can’t do extraordinarily powerful things but she can make an animal do what she wants. I find watching her do tricks interesting because they are different.
One day I was watching my friends using their powers; this was a regular, but boring, event that happened in my day to day life. They would have competitions to see who could lift the biggest rock with their minds. They challenged each other and had practice fights throwing sticks at each other. Some of my friends even thought they could teleport but they couldn’t, no one could. It was a power that was lost a long time ago. Then Alisha came over and sat next to me on the stump. She looked at me then took her squirrel who always followed her. She stared at it for a long time. Her thoughts transferring from her mind to its mind. Then suddenly the squirrel jumped out of her hands and ran away. “What happened?” I asked.
“I think it got scared. That’s never happened before. Anyway have you seen any signs of power yet?”
“Unfortunately not. I always dream I have telekinesis though. I dream that I am able to lift the heaviest object, throw the furthest distances. Then I wake up and it’s all gone.” I turned and looked at Alisha and she was giving me a sympathetic look. Her long blond hair appeared to be flowing down her shoulders. I was lost in her blue eyes. I suddenly coughed and looked away, embarrassed. She smiled at me and walked away.
That night I was walking back to my tent. Most people shared theirs with their parents but not me. My parents were dead. They died fighting the humans. I walked into my tent and beside my bed was a panting of them in battle with guns blazing everywhere and them heroically standing in the middle of the battlefield defending the tribe with their lives. They saved the lives of many that day. Not everyone in the tribe thinks that my mum and dad were heroes though. Some detest them for trying to start a war with the humans. They say that my parents nearly caused the whole tribe to be killed. I don’t listen to them even though a small part of me can’t help but agree.
That night I had a dream. It was different to all the others, in it I didn’t have any powers. I was standing on the edge of a cliff. This dream felt different as well. It was as if I was watching a movie, but I was acting it out at the same time. There was a man standing on my right and a women standing on my left. I looked at them. They were my parents. I tried to hug them but I couldn’t move. I was forced to stand still. At the bottom of the cliff below me a battle was raging. Bullets were flying everywhere. Waves of power were being thrown at the enemy. The strange thing is was the power was coming from both sides. Either the humans had developed powers or some of us had deserted and joined them. I tried to run and help but again I found I couldn’t move. I turned and looked at my parents, they were both looking at me and then help hands and jumped off the cliff. About half way down they let go and used the power of flight. They flew over the humans and shot something at them. I couldn’t make out what it was but it was obliterating the humans. My parents flew around until all the humans were dead. They then flew back up to me and hugged me. I tried to make sense of this all but before I could say anything they had flown off again. On the horizon I saw millions of humans running towards us with tanks and helicopters. My mum and dad flew straight at them. They hit the ground in front of them and there was a slight delay until a huge green and blue shockwave came flying out. It evaporated everything in its path. It was coming straight towards me…
