If the URL doesn't end in .jpg or .png or some image extension, the hotlink won't work. And this bunch of URLS certainly doesn't.

although, it is pretty cool.

You can easily edit gifs with gimp. They appear as layers. To overlay something on top of a gif animation, create it as a new layer, and duplicate it between every frame. There aren't many frames, so that's easy.
