Samething happenned to me but I updated my comp to windows 7 as I had XP before and now it's better try this...

I offered this in the thread in sanctuary, do you have service pack 2 installed on xp?

New pc you should have, but programs sticking in background can be caused by lack of the above.

Do a virus scan...
Try old version and 3.9 beta.
Run toribash 20 times.
