ive been using paint.net and photoshop cs1 for ever and still cant make good heads, now all i need is a tut lol

There are plenty of tutorials in the tutorials section. I would suggest that you practice a lot and try and do as many tutorials as you can and not just toribash related ones. The more you learn how to use your program, the more tools you have at your disposal when you come up with a design idea.

Gimp and Ps are relatively similar in capability. Ps has more eye candy and effects and stuff but Gimp is free and more straight forward. I suggest you try both and decide what suits you.

i like gimp better its easier for me than photoshop

Try Photoshop, I think it has a more comfortable interface, in my opinion :P
If you want to make good textures do not recommend using Paint, it doesnt have the most appropriate tools, or just lacks good tools.

From the looks of this, I'm the only one who uses plaint.net
but photoshop is the best program but with the downside of a price and requiring alot of practice

So yea, it's really down to a matter of opinion. People who work with photoshop prefer photoshop, people who work with gimp will prefer gimp (I would imagine so anyway).
Photoshop does have more options, so I wider range of detail can be used, but GIMP has a more user-friendly interace, with less options.
