If this is the question...
As far as I know Switzerland uses a bit modified democracy. They have huge amount of votings. They have referendum of every more important question. But I think it only works at few very educated populations.
"Why?"
Marx talks about thesis and antithesis.
Thesis: Slaves
Antithesis: Slaveowners

Both fight with each other and form a synthesis.
Synthesis: Lords and servants

Current thesis: Workers
Current antithesis: capitalists
Synthesis: A socialist government (NOT communism)

To reach communism the process must repeat itself to a point where governments become useless and anarchy becomes a thing. That is his true communistic idea that is also Thomas More's Utopia.
Everybody talking about how America is a republic and not a democracy... America's still a democracy. As Chirs and others pointed out, it's a representative democracy. Being a republic doesn't mean America isn't a democracy. I don't know where people continue to get that idea from...

The United States has a "Constitutional Republic." We have never had a democracy. Our Founding Fathers were extremely leary of democracy.

Representative democracy can be improved. More control on goverment and MP's (even temporary removing their civil rights) to prevent corruption and other shady shady stuff. Also voting on things like its happening in Switzerland.

Thank you for bringing the discussion back on track (:

But would such a solution really work for everyone? Switzerland is in a special place, a very (relatively speaking) small country with unique circumstances that make their way of handling democracy possible.

Such ideas would not work on the USA or many other big democracies, and neither would such big reforms. Many of those big democracies suffer from great amounts of inertia, stubborn fundamentalists and generally speaking a more diverse population with diverse needs.
I cant see political system that can solve all problems that human nature produces. It will always be place for someone to say "this not working". Thats not a reason to give up on election system. Alrternatives are darker.
