torrents aen't illegal, uploading files that is copyrighted is.
i downloaded a free... Free game which gave me a torrent to download it faster and installing it.
oh and gimp is really confusing. i'd recommend paint.net until you think it hinders you from what you want to, then gimp and maybe photoshop.
