I'm strictly against infant or child circumcision, since it's an irreversible violation of the child's bodily integrity without a valid medical reason. Apparently circumcision confers some protection against STD's, but people don't become sexually active until well into their teens, and until that time aren't at risk of STDs anyway. Once the kid reaches the age of consent, he can decide for himself whether to have a piece of his penis amputated or not. I have a hunch most would opt out.

It's not either of those things. People in less developed countries tend to have lower levels of hygeine and sexual health. That's why the medical effects of circumcision in Africa are far more acute.

It's a biological problem sure, but it's impacted by sociocultural factors too, which is why we see the difference.

if you live in a place where you can wash your dick every day with gallons of clean drinking water then any health benefits from having an exposed penis are literally bullshit

People also believe in some African countries that raping virgin babies will cure them of HIV. Think I saw that one on National Geographic.

Pretty much this. I can understand the logic behind circumcision in low-hygiene areas though, not letting the dirt sit there can save you some infections.

It ain't racist if it's true.

What's really disappointing about this is and the other replies is that a single second of research would be enough to dismiss this.

The spread of AIDS is generally considered to be relatively independent of these vague catch-alls of hygiene and "sexual health," and far more dependent upon the use or absence of protection, which is the widely considered the cause of the African HIV epidemic.

Here's information on how circumcision in particular probably affects HIV transmission as strictly a result of biology:
http://journals.lww.com/aidsonline/F...current.7.aspx
tl;dr is that the foreskin probably undergoes microtears during sex, facilitating the spread of HIV.

Here's a CDC article on how to prevent AIDS, a WHO fact sheet (see: risk factors), and a Mayo Clinic source:
http://www.cdc.gov/actagainstaids/ba...revention.html
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs360/en/
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-c...n/con-20013732
Note that none of these suggest "avoid being dirty like the Africans." If hygiene significantly impacts prevention, why does every single authority on the topic fail to even mention it?

The assertion that the specific groups are too dirty for their results to matter in the developed world is at best fundamentally misplaced due to the nature of the topic, and at worst outright bigoted.

The other replies are similarly uninformed and so deserve no mention.

EDIT: Odlov is on the money with this one. Full agreement.

You're getting sidetracked. Regardless of the cause, the fact remains that you can't use African studies to determine circumcision's necessity in the developed world. Why? Because, it's not representative of its effects on us.

You throw around damning words 'racist' and 'bigot' way too much, btw. There's no prejudice here. No one's hating on anyone. Calm down.

Lol right, geography is racist: "thinking USA and Africa are different is raaaaciiissstt".

Ok, USA and Africa are literally identical, you're right.

I'll give you that one because honestly I think it's funnier this way. From now on for all intents and purposes Africa and USA are the same thing guys, let's hope this comes up in a future debate!

What the fuck
1.) Infections are more likely to occur with foreskin
2.) This shit seems to matter if you are unable to properly clean your dick (bacterial infections)
3.) This shit seems to matter if you are unable to properly protect your dick during sex (Sexually transmitted diseases)
4.) If you are unable to properly clean or protect your dick circumcision may seem like a legitimate option (Africa)
5.) If you have unlimited access to dick protecting and cleaning supplies such as condoms, water, and soap, the infection argument should not be used to justify circumcision
6.) In the U.S. (and western world) the infection argument is irrelevant.
