In the anime and manga, the eyes are always under a darker shadow:

so, I found it appropriate to make them as such. I tried to refrain from adding
too much detail or light in the eyes.

i like the style of the texture very much, but it has a big lack of depth..

i just wanted to show you what i meant. the flesh looks like its on the bone not below it on your version, when you add more highlights and darker parts, you can make it look like its behind the flesh very easily.
