I did this in Photoshop cs5 and would like to know what i could do to improve... i tried adding streams of light around the outside of the orb but it didn't look right

Just add a little effects in Background or an image (that looks good with your tori) should be nice.

It needs way more editing.
You should add a clean background to your tori,
make a higher quality orb, add lights, beams etc.

Love the ball but it seems the tori with it is.. out of place?

The pose isn't the greatest i'm in the same oppinion with rumbashan, also the black font is one that is really compulsory, take it out, quality is shitty but set is pretty nice.
Just make all what i sayd and this will look cooler.

5/10 is all that i can say about this work.
