qi is the japanese word for experience. you get 1 qi for every game you play. some items are qi- (experience-) restricted so you can only get them with a higher belt. also, this should go in support.

Qi is what determines your belt.
You win Qi by playing matches, no matter wether you win or lose.
Some items are Qi restricted, so you have to meet a certain criteria before you buy them.

Qi=Experience
Its for=Restricted items, belts, some tournaments, also for some of the servers....

oh, one thing: you can also buy a qi booster for real money. means you get your qi doubled (2 qi per fight). and i also heard rumours about buying plain qi.
