I am also on a proxy server and for some reason it has been working for the past month or so. But it never worked before that.
It could have to do with your service provider blocking some ports though. But i'm not an expert on this.

The main thing with proxy servers is making sure the proxy you're using supports the required ports for the game.
Take a look in the FAQ for a list of required ports, then you'll need to check with the proxy's provider to see if they're letting them through.
