why?

The ranks work like this:
Each belt level has an infinite amount of ranks. If you are ranked 1 in blue belt and then progress to brown belt, your qi will be measured against those who are also brown belts and wherever your qi stands in comparison to theirs is where you will be ranked. You may have 2001 qi and be ranked 400, but when you had 1985qi you were ranked 20, the change is because you went up a belt and into a new rank system.
