Here, I'll Explain how betting goes. You put something up on the line for something you will believe happen. So do other people. If you put something up, but nobody else puts anything up, then that doesn't matter. If what you want to happen doesn't happen, regardless if anyone else betted or not, you still lose your item, In this case, your 40k tc. If you win, you get part of the other peoples things they gave up, if they opposed your prediction.

In toribash words, you bet 40k that you will win, nobody else betted, which still means you can lose that tc, and you lost it.
It's just the risk you take when you bet
