so i installed xfce, and toribash runs like a dream. it isn't as good as when i had 7 on this comp but it's definitely good enough. maybe someday i'll figure how to run it just as fast, but this is good for now.

It's probably not going to be as fast as it is on Windows, nor will it be as stable, but it works 95% of the time.
