Whenever I hold a joint, and click once, it'll go straight to contract and extend and ONLY the two. I've checked, it's not my mouse. It'll do fine as long as the joints are not in the "hold" position.
check what your mouse buttons are set to.
If you do
setup>options>mouse buttons [1]
It should make it so clicking does relax, extend, contract, hold... In that order.
